History
Big, gushing streams. I'm starting to feel inadequate.
A few more details not included in the link (compiled from World of Thedas Vol 2 and spruced up with headcanon):
—Bull’s discharge from Seheron comes as the result of PTSD after a merchant Iron Bull (then Hissrad) had considered friendly poisoned the majority of the men under his command. Hassrad vowed revenge and lead his remaining men to the jungle hideout. Upon entering, Hissrad’s long time friend took an arrow to the throat and died instantly. Hissrad went berserk and killed every enemy within the compound; it was during this rage that he lost two fingers on his left hand. When the Ben-Hassrath caught up with him, Hissrad declared himself unfit for duty and turned himself in to re-education. Unwilling to break a tool they still deemed useful, the Ben-Hassrath sent Hissrad to Orlais, where he renamed himself The Iron Bull and worked as a mercenary for cover.
Personality
The Iron Bull describes himself as malleable (although in not so many words). He appreciates the Qun because he believes that it keeps him from going mad which is his worst fear. He hides a beast-like fury under a veneer of calm, and obfuscates his actual rather high intelligence with stupidity. Yes, he genuinely enjoys drinking and sex, but it is a cover for the spy personality he keeps well hidden. Lately, he’s been having doubts about his place in the Qun, having come to care for his Chargers as family. However, Bull is terrified of becoming Tal-Vashoth for two reasons: either that means he’s truly fallen into madness, or the Tal-Vashoth he’s hunted and eradicated through the years as one of the best agents the Ben-Hassrath had to offer weren’t truly insane after all.
Bull sees himself as a tool; not in the popped collar douchebag sense, but like he's a hammer. He's something to be used. His intelligence comes secondary to that, and it's not something he'd admit to, mostly because of his cover. He won't hide it, but it's not something he brings up himself. He'd rather play dumb and get people to underestimate him. His major weakness is his desperate need for control over himself. Not over the people in his company or other people in general. Also redheads. Another fear is his fear of giving into the madness he gave into in Seheron.
He's pretty cynical in general because of Seheron. Seheron broke him from being that bright eyed young child who wanted to help people. He's disillusioned by a lot, including the Qun which creates internal conflict for him. The Bull has a lot of painful memories, probably more than good ones, although his Tama is one of the good ones. (He'd make a joke here about some barmaid in some city also being one of the good ones here, to deflect, by the way.)
He likes ‘em pretty and unbreakable, as he’s prone to enjoying rough sex -- but he’s not violent, in bed or out (outside of battle). He likes the color pink and hot chocolate with marshmallows and dragons and his family of strays. He’s big on consent and even bigger on accepting people as they are. He’s laid back and easy going, but don’t ever underestimate him. You may not live to regret it.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Best At: Hitting enemies so they fly into pieces (his record is three), running full speed into danger, murdering the shit out of everything in his path, people reading, gathering information without people realizing he’s doing so, leading a stray group of misfits
Worst At: Being truthful to himself, admitting when he’s hurt (physically), wearing shirts, not making lewd commentary, fucking demons how do they work (miracles???)
Inventory
Axe, company of mercenaries, circus tent pants.
Motivation
Offering his mercenary company to bolster the Inquisition's forces, and also spying on them for the Ben Hassrath (for now).

2:
The Bull skids to a stop when he hears the encroaching armies coming to assist in his (totally not embarrassing) predicament. He's grateful for it; there's no way he would have been able to keep all of them off of him and lived to tell about it. He's surprised to see an Avvar here in the Hinterlands, but then again, the Inquisition had been hiring all sorts, as of late. He himself was a case in point, even if he'd been the one to offer service a first.
Her skill is impressive, or at least the little bit he can catch while he's helping the Inqusition soldiers get rid of the three other bears on his tail. The fact she could take it down on her own is telling enough of her strength, and Bull whistles low when the fighting finally stops, bear carcasses and bits littering the ground around them. He has no interest in rifling through the innards of a bear in an attempt to find gold. His interest lies in the woman who can take down a great bear on her own. The Bull waits for her to finish her prayer before approaching, axe slung over one shoulder, and nods to to her blade.
"Nice work. I take it this isn't your first time."
Killing bears, he means. Maybe just killing in general, he's not really going to judge. He doesn't know anything about the Avvar, just that they're people who tend to keep to themselves for the most part, and they worship nature rather than Andraste. She seems harmless enough. Then again, most things are harmless to a nearly seven foot tall Qunari.
